How do you get rid of blackheads permanently?

Blackheads cannot be removed for good because pores keep producing oil, but they can be controlled. At Nest Clinic we combine gentle professional extraction, salicylic acid peels and our Q Facial to clear plugged pores, then prescribe a retinoid or BHA routine to slow new build-up. Most patients see clearer pores after one visit, with longer-lasting control from monthly sessions and consistent home care.

Understanding blackheads

An open, oxidised plug

A blackhead (open comedone) forms when sebum and dead skin cells collect in a pore that stays open at the surface. The dark colour is not dirt — it comes from the plug oxidising and scattering light. Blackheads gather where oil glands are densest: the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks.

They are closely linked to oily skin and often appear alongside whiteheads, which are the closed version of the same blockage. Squeezing at home can stretch pores and leave marks.

Signs of stubborn blackheads

  • Dark dots across the nose, chin or forehead
  • Return within days of pore strips or squeezing
  • Pores that look larger or stretched
  • Rough texture when you run a finger over the skin
  • Shine and makeup breakdown by midday
Many small dark dots on the nose are actually sebaceous filaments, a normal feature of the skin. Our doctors will tell you which is which before treatment.
Our approach

Clear, calm and controlled

We clear the existing plugs gently, then work on why they form, so the result lasts beyond the visit.

01

Professional extraction

Softened, sterile extraction by trained staff empties blocked pores without the stretching and trauma of squeezing at home.

02

Salicylic acid peels

Oil-soluble BHA peels dissolve the plug inside the pore and smooth the surface with little or no downtime.

03

Q Facial

Our medical Q Facial deep-cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates in one session — a comfortable choice for a short stay.

04

Oil control with Xeomin

Very fine, superficial micro-injections of Xeomin can temporarily reduce oil output on the T-zone, so pores clog less quickly.

05

Prescription home care

A retinoid or BHA routine, chosen for your skin, keeps pores turning over between visits.

What to expect

Clearer pores, smoother feel

Drag the handle to compare. Blackheads are cleared at the visit, while home care slows them returning.

Safety first

Possible side effects

Mild redness, a few hours of tingling and slight dryness are common after extraction and peels. Uncommon risks include small marks or bruising at extraction sites, temporary flaking, irritation in sensitive skin and, rarely, post-inflammatory darkening. We use gentle technique, conservative peel strengths and calming aftercare to keep these low.

Let us know if you use isotretinoin or strong retinoids, or have inflamed or sensitive skin, as we will adjust or postpone peels.

FAQ

Blackheads questions, answered

Do pore strips or squeezing work?
They remove the top of the plug but not the rest, and they can stretch pores, cause redness or leave marks. Professional extraction after proper softening is gentler and more thorough.
How long until blackheads come back?
Pores keep producing oil, so some blackheads return in a few weeks. A retinoid or BHA routine and monthly maintenance visits keep them noticeably fewer.
Is there any downtime?
Usually none. You may be slightly pink for a few hours, so you can return to sightseeing, meetings or dinner the same day.
Will treatment make my pores smaller?
Clearing plugs makes pores look smaller straight away. For pores that stay wide, see our enlarged pores treatments such as Potenza.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. We choose milder peels, limit extraction and add calming care if your skin reacts easily.
