What is the most effective treatment for frown lines between the eyebrows?

Glabellar or frown lines are caused mainly by the corrugator and procerus muscles pulling the brows together. Botulinum toxin such as Xeomin is the standard first treatment: it relaxes these muscles, with softening in 3–7 days and results lasting around 3–4 months. Deep lines that remain at rest may also need a very soft hyaluronic acid filler or skin booster, placed with great care. Results vary between individuals.

Understanding glabellar lines

The lines that make you look cross

Glabellar lines are the vertical, sometimes slightly angled creases between the eyebrows, often called the 11 lines. They form when the corrugator and procerus muscles contract as we frown, concentrate or squint, and can remain visible at rest as the skin thins with age.

They can give an angry or tired impression even when you feel relaxed. They are often treated together with forehead lines and crow's feet for a balanced upper face.

Signs you may benefit

  • Vertical lines between the brows when frowning
  • Lines that stay visible at rest
  • People asking if you are tired or upset
  • Habitual frowning when reading or in bright light
  • Lines deepening over the past few years
Our approach

Relax first, then refine

Most patients need only botulinum toxin; deeper, long-standing lines may need additional care.

01

Xeomin botulinum toxin

Precise injections into the frowning muscles soften lines and help prevent them deepening.

02

Very soft HA filler

Tiny amounts of a fine filler such as Belotero smooth etched lines that remain after the muscles relax — see Belotero.

03

Skin boosters

Skinvive or Rejuran improve skin quality and fine creasing between the brows.

04

Combined upper-face plan

Balanced treatment of the frown, forehead and eyes keeps brows in a natural position.

Safety first

Possible side effects

Small injection marks, mild redness, bruising and a mild headache are common and short-lived. Uncommon effects include temporary brow asymmetry and, rarely, eyelid drooping (ptosis), which is temporary. We reduce these risks with precise placement and conservative doses.

The area between the brows has delicate blood supply, so filler here carries a higher risk of vascular occlusion. We use filler here only when needed, in very small amounts, with slow low-pressure injection, and keep hyaluronidase available.

Toxin is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with certain neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis.

FAQ

Glabellar Lines questions, answered

Does it hurt?
Most patients feel only brief pinches. Ice or numbing cream can be used if you are sensitive.
Will I still be able to frown?
Movement is reduced, not removed entirely, at natural doses. Your expressions remain, but the strong pull that creases the skin softens.
Can I fly home after treatment?
Yes, flying a few hours after treatment is generally fine. Avoid rubbing the area, lying flat or intense exercise for the rest of the day.
How long do results last?
Botulinum toxin usually lasts around 3–4 months. With regular treatment, many patients find lines at rest become less visible over time.
Do I need filler for my frown lines?
Usually not. Filler is considered only for deep lines that remain after toxin, and it is placed with extra caution in this area.
What about other lines on my face?
Shallow lines elsewhere often respond to fine line treatments such as skin boosters.
