How does Sculptra work and how long does it last?

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which stimulates your own collagen rather than filling space directly. After injection, the body gradually builds new collagen over 2–3 months, restoring volume and firmness in hollow temples, cheeks and the lower face. Most patients need 2–3 sessions about 4–6 weeks apart. Results build gradually and can last around two years, though they vary with age, lifestyle and skin quality.

Understanding Sculptra

Rebuilding, not just filling

From our thirties onwards, collagen production slows and facial fat pads shrink. The result is gradual hollowing at the temples and cheeks, softer jawline definition and thinner, less resilient skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers replace volume directly; Sculptra works differently by prompting your skin to produce new collagen over time.

This makes it well suited to diffuse loss of facial volume and hollow cheeks, where a gradual, overall improvement looks more natural than a sudden change.

Signs Sculptra may suit you

  • Gradual hollowing of temples or cheeks
  • Overall thinning of the face with age or weight loss
  • Skin that looks less firm and resilient
  • You prefer subtle change that friends won't notice suddenly
  • Mild jawline softening with early laxity
Sculptra is not used in the lips or directly under the eyes, where hyaluronic acid fillers are more appropriate.
Our approach

A gradual collagen program

Sculptra is planned as a course, and we often combine it with other treatments for structure and skin quality.

01

Careful preparation

Sculptra is reconstituted and hydrated well in advance according to recommended protocols for smooth, even distribution.

02

Deep, even placement

Your doctor injects in a fanning pattern with a needle or cannula into deeper layers to stimulate collagen across the treated area.

03

Massage protocol

The 5-5-5 massage routine (five minutes, five times a day, for five days) helps spread product evenly and reduce the risk of nodules.

04

Pairing with HA fillers

Where immediate structure is needed — such as the chin — Juvéderm or Restylane can be combined with Sculptra.

05

Lifting synergy

Combining with Ulthera or Thermage FLX can support firmness for early sagging.

06

Body treatments

Sculptra is also used off the face — see Body Sculptra for the buttocks, hips and arms.

What to expect

Volume that returns gradually

Drag the handle to compare. Collagen builds slowly, so the face looks progressively fuller and firmer over several months.

Safety first

Possible side effects

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common for a few days. The initial swelling makes the face look fuller, but this fades within days before the collagen effect gradually appears.

The main specific risk is small nodules or papules under the skin, which can appear weeks or months later. We reduce this with correct dilution, deep and even placement, avoiding high-movement areas such as the lips, and a strict massage routine. Unlike hyaluronic acid, Sculptra cannot be dissolved, so we treat conservatively and build in stages. Vascular occlusion is rare.

Tell us about previous fillers, permanent implants, keloid history, autoimmune conditions and blood-thinning medication.

FAQ

Sculptra questions, answered

When will I see Sculptra results?
Initial fullness from swelling fades within a few days. The real result appears gradually as collagen builds, usually noticeable from 6–8 weeks and continuing to improve for several months.
How many sessions do I need?
Most patients need 2–3 sessions about 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the degree of volume loss. Your doctor will estimate the number of vials at consultation.
I live abroad. Can I still have Sculptra?
Yes, if you can return for a second session, or continue the course with a qualified injector at home. We provide a written summary of product and dose for continuity.
Sculptra or hyaluronic acid filler?
Hyaluronic acid gives immediate, dissolvable volume in specific spots. Sculptra gives gradual, diffuse improvement and firmness over months. Many patients benefit from both.
Is Sculptra painful?
Most patients feel pressure and mild discomfort. Lidocaine is often mixed in, and numbing cream is applied beforehand.
How long do the results last?
Results can last around two years, though ageing continues, so many patients have a single maintenance session every 1–2 years. Results vary between individuals.
