Can freckles be removed with laser?

Yes. Freckles (ephelides) sit in the upper skin and usually respond well to pigment lasers such as pico or Q-switched Nd:YAG. Many patients see clear fading after 1–3 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart, though small crusts may stay for 5–7 days. Freckles are sun-driven and can reappear, so daily sunscreen is essential. At Nest Clinic settings are adjusted for your skin tone; results vary.

Understanding freckles

Small spots, sun-driven

Freckles are small, flat light-brown spots that appear on sun-exposed skin, especially the nose and cheeks. They are largely genetic and darken in summer when UV stimulates melanocytes to produce more pigment, then lighten in winter.

Freckles are often confused with melasma or sun spots. The distinction matters: a laser that clears freckles can worsen melasma, so we confirm the diagnosis first.

Signs they are freckles

  • Small, scattered light-brown dots
  • Most visible on the nose and cheeks
  • Darker in summer, lighter in winter
  • Present since childhood or adolescence
  • Sharp edges rather than diffuse patches
Our doctors use magnified skin analysis to distinguish freckles from melasma, sun spots and age spots before choosing a laser.
Our approach

Targeted freckle clearing

We choose the laser and settings according to your freckle depth, skin tone and whether melasma is also present.

01

Pico laser spot treatment

Picosecond pulses shatter pigment into fine particles with less heat, making it suitable for many skin tones.

02

Q-switched spot treatment

Nanosecond Nd:YAG pulses target each freckle precisely; small crusts form and shed within a week.

03

Laser toning

Low-energy toning gently lightens widespread freckles, or freckles mixed with melasma, over several sessions. See Dual Toning.

04

LDM calming care

Water-kinetic ultrasound soothes the skin after laser and supports the barrier to reduce rebound pigment.

05

Home care & sun protection

Brightening topicals and broad-spectrum sunscreen help keep freckles from returning.

What to expect

A clearer, even complexion

Drag the handle to compare. Treated freckles lift away with fine crusts, revealing clearer skin underneath.

Is it right for you?

Good candidates

  • Light-brown freckles on the nose and cheeks
  • Freckles that darken every summer
  • Patients who can protect skin from sun after treatment
  • Visitors able to stay about a week for crusts to shed
  • Mixed freckles and melasma, with a gentle toning plan
Safety first

Possible side effects

Redness and fine crusts over treated spots are expected and usually shed within 5–7 days. Uncommon risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary darkening), especially in darker skin or after sun exposure, and rarely lighter patches or textural change.

We reduce risk with skin-type-appropriate settings, test spots where needed, calming care and strict sun-protection guidance.

We avoid laser on recently tanned skin, during pregnancy, or with active infection. Tell us if you take photosensitising medication or isotretinoin.

FAQ

Freckles questions, answered

Will freckles come back after laser?
Treated freckles usually fade well, but new ones can appear with sun exposure because the tendency is genetic. Daily sunscreen and occasional maintenance help keep skin clear.
How many sessions do I need?
Many patients need 1–3 sessions about 4 weeks apart. Very widespread freckles or freckles mixed with melasma may need more gentle toning sessions.
Is there downtime?
With spot treatment, small dark crusts appear and shed within 5–7 days. You can wear make-up after 24 hours if your doctor approves. Toning has almost no visible downtime.
Can I fly home right after treatment?
Yes, flying is fine. Keep the area moisturised and protect it from sun, and do not pick crusts. If you have only a few days, toning may suit your schedule better.
Is laser safe for my darker skin?
Pico and low-energy Q-switched lasers can be used for darker skin with conservative settings. The main risk is temporary darkening, which we reduce with careful settings and aftercare.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe a quick snapping sensation. Numbing cream keeps treatment comfortable.
