Can laser toning lighten dark underarms, elbows and knees?

Yes, in many cases. Body toning uses low-energy Q-switched or pico laser passes to break up excess pigment gradually without significant heat injury. It is commonly used for darkened underarms, elbows, knees, inner thighs, bikini lines and post-acne marks on the back. Most patients need 5–10 sessions every 1–2 weeks for visible brightening. Treating friction, shaving irritation or hormonal causes helps keep results, which vary between individuals.

Understanding body pigmentation

Why body skin darkens

Darkening on the body usually comes from repeated friction (tight clothing, thighs rubbing), shaving or waxing irritation, inflammation from acne or ingrown hairs, sun exposure and sometimes hormonal or metabolic factors. The skin responds by producing extra melanin, which builds up over time.

It is closely related to skin darkening and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on the face, and responds to the same principle: gentle, repeated treatment that clears pigment without provoking new inflammation.

Areas we commonly treat

  • Underarms darkened by shaving or deodorant irritation
  • Elbows and knees with rough, darker skin
  • Inner thighs and bikini line affected by friction
  • Back and chest marks left after body acne
  • Uneven tone on the neck, shoulders or décolletage
Velvety, thickened dark patches on the neck or underarms can occasionally signal insulin resistance. Our doctors will mention it if a medical check-up is worthwhile.
Our approach

A gentle body brightening plan

Each plan is adjusted to the area, the cause of darkening and your skin tone.

01

Laser toning

Low-energy Q-switched Nd:YAG passes reduce pigment gradually and safely across all skin tones, using the same principle as Dual Toning on the face.

02

Pico toning

Picosecond pulses target stubborn pigment with less heat, useful for long-standing darkening and post-acne marks.

03

Gentle peels

Mild exfoliating peels soften rough texture on elbows and knees and help brightening products work.

04

Calming care

Barrier-supporting treatment after laser keeps inflammation low and reduces the risk of rebound darkening.

05

Home routine

Prescribed brightening topicals, friction reduction tips and sunscreen for exposed areas protect your results.

What to expect

Gradual, even brightening

Drag the handle to compare. Body pigment fades in layers over a course of sessions rather than all at once.

Safety first

Possible side effects

Body toning is generally well tolerated. Mild redness, warmth or dryness for a few hours is common. Uncommon risks include temporary darkening, patchy lightening if over-treated, and irritation if the area is shaved or rubbed straight after treatment. We use conservative settings, test areas on darker skin and allow enough time between sessions.

We avoid laser toning during pregnancy and over active infection, eczema flare-ups or fresh sunburn. Please avoid waxing or harsh scrubs on the area for a few days after each session.

FAQ

Body Toning questions, answered

Does body toning hurt?
Most patients feel light snapping or warmth. It is well tolerated without numbing on most areas, though the underarms and bikini line can be a little more sensitive.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people start with 5–10 sessions spaced 1–2 weeks apart. Long-standing darkening or darker skin tones may need more, with occasional maintenance afterwards.
Can I shave or wear deodorant after treatment?
We recommend waiting 24–48 hours before shaving or applying deodorant to treated underarms, and avoiding tight clothing on treated areas for a day.
Will the darkness come back?
It can if the cause continues. Reducing friction and irritation, using gentle hair removal and protecting exposed skin from the sun help keep results.
Is it safe for darker skin?
Yes, low-energy toning is suitable for Fitzpatrick I–VI when settings are conservative. We adjust energy and intervals to minimise the risk of rebound pigmentation.
Can you treat body acne marks too?
Yes. Brown marks from body acne respond well to toning; active breakouts should be controlled first. See our acne treatment page for options.
