How long does Ulthera last and when do you see results?

Ulthera uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualisation to heat the deep supporting layer (SMAS) and dermis, prompting new collagen. Some firmness may be felt soon after, but the main lift develops gradually over 2–3 months as collagen rebuilds. Results commonly last around a year, sometimes longer, depending on age, skin quality and lifestyle. Most patients have one session, with maintenance every 12–18 months. Results vary between individuals.

Understanding Ulthera

Lifting from the foundation up

Ulthera (Ultherapy) is an FDA-cleared micro-focused ultrasound device. Unlike lasers, which work at the surface, it delivers tiny points of heat to the SMAS — the same layer tightened in a surgical facelift — and to the deeper dermis. An on-screen ultrasound image lets the doctor see these layers and place energy precisely.

It is designed for mild to moderate sagging skin: a softening jawline, heavier lower face or descending brows. It does not replace volume, so where volume loss is part of the picture we may suggest combining it with fillers or Sculptra.

Ulthera may suit you if you notice

  • A softer jawline or early jowls
  • Brows or upper eyelids sitting lower than before
  • Looser skin under the chin
  • Deepening folds from descending cheeks
  • Crepey skin on the neck or décolletage
Our newer system, Ulthera Prime, uses the same treatment principle with enhanced imaging. Your doctor will recommend the version and energy plan that suit you.
Our approach

A tailored Ulthera plan

Line counts, depths and areas are set by your doctor after assessing your anatomy, skin thickness and goals.

01

Visualised treatment

Real-time imaging shows each layer before energy is delivered, helping avoid bone and keeping depth consistent.

02

Three treatment depths

4.5 mm for the SMAS, 3.0 mm for the deep dermis and 1.5 mm for superficial firmness on thinner areas.

03

Full face or targeted

Treat the whole face and neck, or focus on the brow, jawline, under-chin or neck.

04

Comfort planning

Topical numbing, cooling and paced delivery; additional pain relief can be discussed.

05

Combination care

Paired with fillers, Sculptra or skin boosters when volume or skin quality also needs attention.

06

Alternative energy

For thinner faces or lower pain tolerance, radiofrequency options such as Oligio may be suggested instead.

Is it right for you?

Good candidates

  • Adults with mild to moderate laxity of the face or neck
  • People who want a lift without surgery or long downtime
  • Patients maintaining results after a facelift
  • Visitors to Seoul who prefer a single-session treatment
Ulthera cannot match a surgical facelift for very loose skin; we will tell you honestly if surgery would serve you better.
Safety first

Possible side effects

Discomfort during treatment is common and varies by area. Afterwards, mild redness, swelling, tenderness or tingling may last from hours to a few days. Uncommon risks include bruising, raised welts along treatment lines, temporary numbness and, rarely, temporary nerve weakness or fat loss in very thin faces. Visualised depth control and conservative energy help reduce these risks.

We do not treat during pregnancy, over open wounds or active skin infection, or directly over certain implants. Tell us about any fillers or threads you have had.

FAQ

Ulthera questions, answered

Does Ulthera hurt?
Most patients feel deep, brief heat or prickling with each pulse, strongest over bony areas. Sensitivity varies; we use numbing cream, pacing and cooling, and can discuss further pain relief.
Can I fly home after Ulthera?
Yes. Swelling is usually mild, and flying the next day is generally fine. Results build over 2–3 months, so you will see the main change after you are home.
How long does it last?
Commonly around a year, sometimes longer. Natural ageing continues, so many patients repeat treatment every 12–18 months.
Ulthera or Thermage — which should I choose?
Ulthera works deeper with focused ultrasound and is chosen mainly for lifting; radiofrequency devices such as Thermage FLX or Oligio heat the skin more broadly for tightening and texture. Some patients benefit from both.
Will it make my face look thinner?
At conservative settings, fat loss is uncommon. In very slim faces we avoid deeper fat-rich areas or choose a gentler option.
Can I combine Ulthera with fillers?
Yes. Ulthera lifts and tightens, while fillers restore volume. We usually perform Ulthera first or space treatments according to your plan.
