What causes puffy eyes and how can you reduce them?

Puffy eyes are usually caused by fluid collecting in the thin lower-lid tissue — from salt, alcohol, poor sleep, allergies, crying or hormonal changes — and are often worse in the morning. Reducing triggers, cool compresses and treating allergies help most. At Nest Clinic we add LDM ultrasound and lymphatic-support care to ease swelling, and strengthen thin skin with Rejuran. Results vary; persistent puffiness should be checked by a doctor.

Understanding puffy eyes

Fluid that comes and goes

The skin of the lower eyelid is among the thinnest on the body, so even small amounts of fluid show as puffiness. It tends to fluctuate: worse after a salty dinner, a long-haul flight, alcohol, allergies or broken sleep, and better as the day goes on and gravity helps it drain.

Puffiness that never changes may instead be under-eye bags from fat pads, which need a different approach. Persistent swelling of both eyes can also signal thyroid, kidney or allergic conditions, so we ask about your health.

Signs of fluid-related puffiness

  • Worst on waking and improves through the day
  • Worse after salt, alcohol, crying or flights
  • Soft, rather than firm, swelling
  • Itchy or watery eyes in allergy season
  • Comes and goes rather than staying constant
Sudden, painful or one-sided swelling, or swelling with redness or vision changes, needs prompt medical review rather than cosmetic care.
Our approach

Ease the swelling, support the skin

We focus on reducing fluid and making the lower-lid skin more resilient — gently, because this area is delicate.

01

LDM de-puffing

Water-kinetic ultrasound calms inflammation and supports circulation around the eyes, with no downtime.

02

Lymphatic support care

Gentle drainage techniques and cooling help move excess fluid, a comfortable option straight after a long flight.

03

Rejuran for thin skin

Polynucleotide injections strengthen and thicken delicate lower-lid skin so puffiness and fine under-eye wrinkles show less.

04

Allergy and trigger review

Our doctors look at allergy, sleep, salt and skincare triggers and suggest practical changes or medication where suitable.

05

When filler is not the answer

Filler can worsen fluid-prone eyes, so we only consider under-eye fillers when hollowing, not swelling, is the main concern.

Is it right for you?

Good candidates

  • Morning puffiness that improves during the day
  • Puffiness after flights, salt or poor sleep
  • Thin lower-lid skin that shows swelling easily
  • Visitors who want no-downtime eye care during their trip
Safety first

Possible side effects

LDM and drainage care are very low risk; brief warmth or pinkness is the most common effect. After Rejuran, small bumps, mild swelling and occasional bruising usually settle within 1–3 days. Uncommon risks include prolonged swelling, infection and allergic reaction. We use fine needles, small amounts and careful technique around the eye.

We avoid injections during pregnancy, over active eye infections or eczema, and refer persistent unexplained swelling for medical tests.

FAQ

Puffy Eyes questions, answered

Why are my eyes puffier after flying to Seoul?
Dry cabin air, salty meals, sitting still and jet-lagged sleep all encourage fluid retention around the eyes. It usually settles within a few days; LDM and cooling care can help it ease faster.
Is there downtime?
None after LDM or drainage care. After Rejuran, expect small bumps or slight swelling for a day or two.
Will eye cream fix puffy eyes?
Caffeine or cooling eye products can give a brief de-puffing effect, but they do not change the underlying cause. Managing triggers makes the bigger difference.
Are puffy eyes the same as eye bags?
No. Puffiness is mainly fluid and fluctuates; bags are a constant bulge from fat pads. See under-eye bags for structural options.
How long do results last?
Fluid can return when triggers return, so de-puffing is temporary. Improvements in skin thickness from Rejuran build over 3–5 sessions and fade gradually over months.
