How do you treat inflamed, irritated facial skin?

Inflamed skin settles fastest when the cause is identified and the barrier is repaired at the same time. At Nest Clinic our doctors first distinguish acne, rosacea-type redness, contact or seborrhoeic dermatitis and over-treated skin. Treatment then combines short courses of prescription topicals, LDM ultrasound to calm and hydrate, and a simplified routine. Many patients feel more comfortable within 1–2 weeks, with steadier skin after 3–4 weeks; results vary.

Understanding skin inflammation

When skin is sending a signal

Skin inflammation is the skin's response to irritation, infection, allergy or a weakened barrier. It shows up as redness, heat, stinging, flaking, bumps or sudden breakouts. Common causes include inflammatory acne, rosacea, seborrhoeic or contact dermatitis, harsh actives, over-exfoliation and heat or climate changes while travelling.

Because inflammation can leave marks behind — such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — calming it early also protects your skin tone. Persistent flushing may overlap with facial redness, which we assess alongside.

Signs your skin is inflamed

  • Redness, warmth or stinging, especially after skincare
  • Flaking or tightness alongside oiliness
  • Sudden clusters of red bumps or pustules
  • Products that used to suit you now burn
  • Flare-ups after travel, stress or a strong treatment
Some rashes need a medical diagnosis rather than an aesthetic treatment. If we suspect infection, allergy or a skin disease, our doctors will tell you directly and treat or refer accordingly.
Our approach

Calm first, then correct

We treat the trigger and the barrier together — the combination depends on what is driving your inflammation.

01

Doctor diagnosis

Magnified skin analysis and a careful history of products, medicines and recent treatments to find the trigger.

02

LDM calming therapy

Water-kinetic ultrasound soothes heat and redness and supports barrier recovery without heat injury.

03

Prescription care

Short, supervised courses of anti-inflammatory topicals or oral medication when acne, rosacea or dermatitis is confirmed.

04

Barrier repair

Hydrating, low-irritation infusions and, where appropriate, Rejuran or exosome care to support recovery of reactive skin.

05

Clearing congestion

Gentle extraction for clogged pores linked to skin congestion — only once active inflammation has calmed.

06

Simplified home routine

A short, fragrance-free routine with sunscreen — often the single most important step.

What to expect

Calmer, more comfortable skin

Drag the handle to compare. Redness and reactivity usually ease gradually as the barrier recovers.

Is it right for you?

Good candidates

  • Skin that stings or reddens with most products
  • Inflamed breakouts or rosacea-type flushing
  • Irritation after peels, lasers or strong actives
  • Flare-ups triggered by travel, climate or stress
  • Visitors who want a doctor's diagnosis and a home plan
If you take isotretinoin or other prescription medicine, bring the name and dose — it changes what we can safely do.
Safety first

Possible side effects

Calming treatments such as LDM are very gentle; brief warmth or pinkness is common. Prescription topicals can cause temporary dryness or stinging in the first days. Uncommon risks include allergic reactions to a product and, with some steroid creams, skin thinning or rebound redness if used too long — which is why we prescribe short, supervised courses.

We postpone lasers and peels while skin is actively inflamed, and we do not treat suspected skin infections cosmetically.

FAQ

Skin Inflammation questions, answered

Is skin inflammation the same as acne?
Not always. Acne is one cause, but redness, stinging and flaking can also come from rosacea, dermatitis or an over-treated barrier. Each needs a different plan, so diagnosis comes first.
How quickly will my skin calm down?
Many patients feel less heat and stinging within a few days to 2 weeks. Steadier, less reactive skin usually takes 3–4 weeks of consistent care; results vary with the cause.
Can I still have laser treatments?
Usually yes, once inflammation has settled. We first calm the skin, then add gentle options for redness or marks. Strong lasers on inflamed skin raise the risk of darkening.
My skin flared up after travelling to Seoul. Is that common?
Yes. Climate change, long flights, hotel water and new products often unsettle sensitive skin. A calming session plus a simplified routine usually helps quickly.
Will inflammation leave marks?
It can, especially in medium to darker skin tones. Treating inflammation early and wearing sunscreen reduces the risk. If marks remain, see our PIH treatment page.
Do I need prescription medicine?
Not always. Mild barrier irritation often responds to LDM and a simpler routine. If acne, rosacea or dermatitis is confirmed, our doctors may suggest a short, monitored prescription course.
