Can enlarged pores be made smaller?

Pores cannot be closed, but they can be made to look noticeably smaller. At Nest Clinic we use Potenza RF microneedling to rebuild collagen around the pore walls, micro-Xeomin to reduce oil and tighten the surface, and Skinvive or Rejuran to improve skin quality. Most patients see refinement after about 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart, with results building over 2–3 months. Results vary with skin type and age.

Understanding enlarged pores

Why pores look bigger

Pores are the openings of hair follicles and oil glands, and their size is largely genetic. They look larger when excess sebum stretches them (common with oily skin), when they are clogged with blackheads, or when collagen around them weakens with age and sun damage, making them sag into an oval or teardrop shape.

Past acne can also leave wide, scarred pores that behave more like shallow acne scars. Identifying which type you have guides the treatment.

Which type are your pores?

  • Round, open pores on the nose and inner cheeks with shine (oil-related)
  • Teardrop-shaped pores on the outer cheeks (laxity-related)
  • Pores that look darker or filled (clogged)
  • Pores that deepen into texture after acne (scar-related)
  • Pores that are more visible under makeup
Most people have a mix. Our doctors use magnified skin analysis to plan the combination that fits your pores.
Our approach

Tighten, rebalance, refine

We treat the oil, the collagen and the surface together, because pores rarely have just one cause.

01

Potenza RF microneedling

Radiofrequency through fine needles remodels collagen around pore walls and reduces oil gland activity — our core pore treatment.

02

Micro-Xeomin

Superficial micro-injections of diluted Xeomin reduce sebum and give a smoother, tighter surface for around 3–4 months.

03

Skin boosters

Skinvive hydrating microdroplets or Rejuran improve skin quality so pores look less prominent.

04

Fractional CO2 laser

For scar-type pores, controlled resurfacing stimulates new collagen; we adjust settings carefully for darker skin.

05

Peels & Q Facial

Salicylic peels and our Q Facial keep pores clear between collagen treatments.

What to expect

Finer-looking pores

Drag the handle to compare. Pores look tighter gradually as new collagen forms around them.

Is it right for you?

Good candidates

  • Visible pores on the nose, cheeks or forehead
  • Oily skin with stretched, open pores
  • Teardrop pores from loss of firmness
  • Pores that remain wide after acne has settled
  • Visitors who can return monthly, or continue maintenance at home
Safety first

Possible side effects

After Potenza, redness, mild swelling and pinpoint marks are common for 1–2 days. Uncommon risks include temporary darkening (more likely in darker skin), acne flare, prolonged redness and, rarely, small grid marks. Micro-Xeomin can cause small bumps and occasional bruising, and rarely a mild change in expression. We use conservative settings, precise superficial technique and calming aftercare to reduce these risks.

We postpone RF and laser during pregnancy, active infection, or within 6 months of oral isotretinoin, and do not use botulinum toxin while pregnant or breastfeeding.

FAQ

Enlarged Pores questions, answered

Can pores be permanently shrunk?
No treatment permanently changes pore size, because oil production and ageing continue. Collagen-building treatments make pores look smaller for many months, and maintenance helps keep the result.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients have about 3 Potenza sessions, 4 weeks apart. Micro-Xeomin is a single session repeated every 3–4 months if you like the result.
Does Potenza hurt?
We apply numbing cream first, so most people feel warmth and light prickling. It is usually well tolerated.
Can I fly home after treatment?
Yes. Redness from Potenza usually settles within 1–2 days, and flying is fine. Keep the skin moisturised on the plane and use sunscreen on arrival.
Will pore strips or toners shrink pores?
They may make pores look clearer briefly but do not change pore structure. Clinical treatment works on the collagen and oil that make pores appear large. For clogged pores, see skin congestion care.
